The Rule of Thirds
In film making ,though the script is at heart of the film, it's through the lens that it comes to life; placing importance on the composition of a shot.
The rule of thirds is where four lines intersect each-other to create 9 equal sized boxes overlapping the shot. According to this rule, used to ensure a balanced composition of mise en scene, important elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
Although these are just general guidelines, admittedly a film or video would be boring if all shots were composed of the subject being placed in the center.
